Citizenship

Article 976 of the Civil Code of Iran defines who is an Iranian national

  1. All persons residing in Iran except those whose foreign nationality is established; the foreign nationality of such persons is considered to be established if their documents of nationality have not been objected to by theIranian Government.
  2. Those born in Iran or outside whose father is Iranian.
  3. Those born in Iran of unknown parentage.
  4. Persons born in Iran of foreign parents, one of whom was also born in Iran.
  5. Persons born in Iran of a father of foreign nationality who have resided at least one more year in Iran immediately after reaching the full age of 18; in other cases theirnaturalization as Iranian subjects will be subject to the stipulations for Iranian naturalization laid down by the law. New legislation passed by the Iranian Parliament in 2012 grants permanent residency to children born to Iranian mothers and foreign fathers.[4]
  6. Every woman of foreign nationality who marries an Iranian husband.
  7. Every foreign national who has obtained Iranian nationality

Multiple Citizenship

Iran does not recognize dual citizenship as such. For the Iranian government, in practice, dual citizens are Iranian citizens only. However, article 977 of the Civil Code of Iran deals with multiple citizenship. As a consequence of Paragraphs 4 or 5 of Article 976, some Iranian minors may have multiple citizenship. If they wish to retain the non-Iranian nationality after age 18, they have to inform Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 2016, Iranian citizens had visa-free or visa on arrival access to 37 countries and territories, ranking the Iranian passport 98th in the world according to the Visa Restrictions Index.

Visa

Visitors to Iran must obtain a visa from one of the Iranian diplomatic missions unless they come from one of the visa exempt countries or countries eligible for visa on arrival. All visitors must hold a passport valid for at least 6 months.

  • – Iran plans to start issuing electronic visas to tourists by the end of 2016
  • – Admission is refused to women not wearing Islamic head cover, scarf, long sleeves or stockings.

Holders of normal passports traveling as tourist can obtain a visa on arrival for a maximum stay of 30 days (extendable for another 15 days) at the following airports:

  • Konarak Airport (Chah- Bahar)
  • Isfahan International Airport (Isfahan)
  • Kish International Airport (Kish Island)
  • Mashhad International Airport (Mashad)
  • Dayrestan Airport (Qeshm Island)
  • Shiraz International Airport (Shiraz)
  • Tabriz International Airport (Tabriz)
  • Imam Khomeini International Airport
  • Mehrabad International Airport (Tehran)
  • The visa on arrival is issued free of charge for citizens of Lebanon.
  • Israelicitizens are totally banned from entry to Iran

Type of visa

Visa is a permission of entry to Iran for a limited period of time issued by Embassies and Consulates General of the Islamic Republic of Iran abroad, for foreign nationals after receiving the approval of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Extension of Visas

Application for extension of visas, including entry, tourist and pilgrimage visas, are issued by Police Department of Aliens Affairs on the basis of justifiable reasons and approval of the mentioned Bureau. Diplomatic and service visa will be extended by the Ministry of Foreign affairs upon the request of the concerned foreign Diplomatic mission in Tehran.

Work permit visa will be extended by Police Aliens Affairs Dep. with Coordination of the Department of Aliens Employment at the ministry of labor and Social Affairs and on the basis of request by the Iranian sponsor of the applicant.

Entry Visa

Entry Visa is a permission issued for foreign experts and businessmen who travel to Iran for a limited period of time (once twice or mutiple) for economic, commercial, cultural and industrial purposes.

Required documents:

  • Two completed visa application forms
  • Valid passport for at least six months
  • 3 recent photos (size 3x4cm)
  • Visa fee
  • Return envelope with address and adequate prepaid postage to cover the cost of registered mail.
  • Interview, if necessary

Electronic visas

Individual and Travelers

Entry or transit Visa for drivers carrying cargo

This visa will be issued for foreign drivers carrying cargo to Iran or other countries. For these cases, it is necessary to coordinate in advance with the Diplomatic Missions of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Required documents:

  • Two completed visa application forms
  • Valid Passport, for at least 6 months
  • 3 Recent photos (Size 3x4cm)
  • Possession of visa for the third country for drivers who carry cargo to destinations in other countries.
  • Payment of visa fee
  • Return envelope with address and adequate prepaid postage to Cover of registered mail.
  • Interview, if necessary

Work Permit Visa

This visa will be issued for foreign nationals who intend to work in Iran. The Iranian host must obtain the work permit in advance from the concerned authorities.

Required documents:

  • Two completed visa application (Form)
  • valid passport, for at least 6 months.
  • 3 Photos (Size 3x4cm)
  • Visa fee
  • Return envelope with address and adequate prepaid postage to cover cost of registered mail.
  • Interview, if necessary

Tourist Visa

Tourist visa is issued for foreign nationals who are iteested to travel to Iran individually or with a group for the purpose of visiting Iran or their relatives.

Required documents:

  • Two completed visa application forms
  • Valid passport, for at least 6 months
  • 3 Recent photos (size 3x4cm)
  • Visa fee
  • Return envelope with address and prepaid postage to cover cost of registered mail.
  • Interview, if necessary
